Federal Minister for Information Technology, Dr. Abdullah Riar, paid a visit to Electronic Government Directorate, Ministry of Information Technology. Honorable Minister was briefed by Executive Director EGD, about the organizational structure of EGD, its growth since its inception and major accomplishments to-date. The Federal Minister appreciated the efforts of Electronic Government Directorate, which he stated is doing a remarkable effort in automating various processes of the federal government and assisting federal government organizations in making their services available online to citizens. However he stressed that unless the basic groundwork and framework for automation of government is not implemented properly, its long-term viability may not be assured. He also stressed that the critical resources, which the government is making available for the IT sector need to be spent judiciously so that the common man can avail maximum benefits and his interaction with the government is facilitated. The ultimate goal of e-government, he stressed, should be to provide services to the common man at his doorsteps.
Federal Minister for Information Technology Dr. Abdullah Riar inaugurated Health Management Information System (UMIS) at Capital Hospital in Islamabad. He said that this project will facilitate the patients & hospital administration through efficient & state of the art Hospital Management Information System. The project of the HMIS was launched to improve patient services through better management and efficient use of available resources both human and financial. The project will result in reduction in file search time, efficiency in medical data retrieval, quick availability of historical data of patients as well as stock management of hospital. Benefits for general public & government includes; Improve Patient Management Performance, E-Governance efficiency and transparency, Improved and efficient Medical Data Retrieval & Maintain historical data of patient and ensure its on-time availability. The project involves installation of Local Area Networks, provision of the basic IT infrastructure; development of HMIS customized software application and dynamic interactive website for Capital Hospital. Comprehensive training of the developed HMIS software applications was also provided to the Capital Hospital staff which included doctors, paramedical, support and administrative staff.
Federal Minister for Information Technology Dr. Abdullah Riar said that ‘Urdu Lexicon, Text-to-Speech & English-to-Urdu Translation Software’ would open new doors for connecting the rural population to the digital revolution as well as open new avenues for researchers and IT companies. The Federal Minister also highlighted the efforts of Electronic Government Directorate, which has done a marvelous job in order to provide on line solutions to the problems of people by bringing most of the government departments on net along with all information and their prescribed duties. Dr. Abdullah Riar further added that the Ministry of Information Technology is ever committed to spread the latest facilities of information technology in the country, as the Ministry is already providing scholarships for research and development in the IT sector. Concluding his speech, the Federal Minister expressed his hope that within next few years Pakistan would be an advanced and developed state in the field on information technology, standing in the line of European and other developed countries.
The Urdu Lexicon project components includes; Lexicon: Comprehensive Lexicon dictionary database with 120,000 words listed and 80,000 words with content, including a variety of information, including meaning, pronunciation, grammatical information, variant forms, usage, Specific Idioms and Phrases was developed. Online Urdu Dictionary (OUD) was developed to provide searching facility for Urdu words to view detailed meanings. The dictionary provides different types of searching mechanisms covering both simple to advance search capabilities, Machine Translation: Translates common English sentences (containing no more than two clauses) into Urdu. The system was provided as plug-in for Internet Explorer / Windows and for RedHat Linux platforms, to translate web pages, Text to Speech: Converts Urdu text to speech. The system is provided as plug-in for Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook to synthesize web pages and emails.
Islamabad , June 17: Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, Minister for Information Technology launched FPSC automation project worth 38.59 million on Saturday. This project was to make online all the processes for registration and recruitment of government employees by the federal public service commission.
"My ministry has executed the project realizing the importance and sensitivity of tasks performed by FPSC," Mr Leghari said at the launch of the project.

Mr. Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, federal minister of information technology along with Mr. Mohammed Nasir Khan, federal minister for health and Mr. Ishaq Khan Khakwani, minister of state for information technology inaugurated, on 12 th June 2006, the first fully integrated Hospital management information system and computerization project for Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).
This was a collaborative project of ministry of Information technology and Ministry of Health who by mutual understanding initiated this project in March 2005. This project was carried out by Electronic Government Directorate
LAN is operational at 55 sites of 29 Federal Divisions. FGDC Team is currently formalizing the Security Policies, Standards and SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) for smooth operations of LAN.
Hiring of 20 Assistant System Administrators and 10 Assistant Network Administrators will be completed by end of August, 2006.
